Sichuan Opera Show

As part of traditional Sichuan opera, face-changing or "bianlian" is a performance in which a single actor depicts a number of different characters by repeatedly changing their facial masks so quickly that visitors do not even notice the process.

Historically, the secret method of face-changing was closely guarded within families. Today, the face-changing show has become very famous and can be seen at many places throughout the country. In Chengdu, face-changing shows take place everyday at many of city's traditional teahouses and opera theaters.

For travelers to Chengdu, sipping a few cups of tea while enjoying the traditional face-changing show in one of the many teahouses is a great way to relax and soak in the local atmosphere.
