Many newcomers to China have never even heard of Datong, but this small city in Shanxi province is home to some amazing historical sites, making it well worth a visit.
To start off your guided tour, you'll visit the Hengshan Hanging Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple precariously situated on the side of a cliff, and the only existing temple that combines Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.
The next stop of your tour is another must-see: Yungang Grottoes, one of China's three famed ancient Buddhist cave art sites. Inside the grottoes, there are over 50,000 statues of the Buddha, many of them over 1,500 years old!
